Whatever the programme calls for. Solo travel is not a reason to book shorter — if anything the opposite, because the first three days are the awkward ones.

What we are treating

I am going by myself and I do not want to eat dinner alone for two weeks.

Most people on a wellness programme are travelling alone. It is the default in this market, not the exception.

This is the most misunderstood thing about wellness travel. A large majority of guests at the houses on this site are on their own, and the houses are organised around that — communal tables where you want them, single tables where you do not, and a timetable that does the work of making conversation for you.

The commercial question is more awkward and we would rather deal with it directly: a programme is priced per person, and sole occupancy of a room costs more than half a double. That supplement is real, it typically runs twenty to thirty per cent, and it is on every price on this site rather than revealed at the quote. Two houses in this atlas have a genuine stock of single rooms rather than doubles sold for sole use, which is a material saving, and we will point you at them.

The other thing worth knowing: several houses run solo-traveller reductions in specific weeks, which are worth building a trip around.

What actually helps

  • ayurvedaThe classical treatment houses are full of solo guests taking an annual cure, many of whom have been coming for years. It is the least awkward room in this atlas to walk into alone.
  • mayrThe Tyrolean cure houses have real single rooms and a guest population that is overwhelmingly solo.
  • yogaA timetable is the easiest possible structure for a solo stay — you meet the same people three times a day without having to arrange anything.

What a programme actually does

  • Both occupancies on every price here, before you enquire rather than after.
  • A house with communal tables if you want them, and no pressure if you do not.
  • A daily timetable, which is the real social mechanism.
  • A single room rather than a double sold for sole use, where we can get one.
  • Airport transfers and arrival arranged end to end, which matters more travelling alone.

The Ayurveda coast. December to April is the dry, calm-sea window on the southwest coast, and when the Ayurveda houses run at capacity with their long-stay European guests. The Yala monsoon soaks this coast from May: some properties simply close, and the ones that do not are quietly discounting a fortnight of rain.

What we would tell you on the phone. Tell us if you have any medical condition that would matter if you were unwell alone in a room, and tell the house. It is the one genuine practical difference between travelling alone and travelling with someone, and every serious property has a procedure for it.

Asked and answered

Questions we actually get

How is this different from Kerala?
Gentler and more comfortable, with a different plant pharmacopoeia and more herbal steam and mud. Kerala goes deeper, particularly for full purification. If it is your first programme, or you want to be by the sea, Sri Lanka is the better choice.
How do I tell a real Ayurveda house from a spa?
Ask whether the property is registered with the Department of Ayurveda as a treatment centre, and who the resident physician is. A licensed house answers both in a sentence. A spa changes the subject.

Not sure this is the right list?

Tell us what is actually wrong and we will shortlist three houses — or tell you that Sri Lanka is the wrong answer, which happens about one enquiry in six.
