The short version

Who this house is for

Somebody who wants a physically intelligent programme — assessment, movement, nutrition, hydrotherapy — in a building that sits over a river gorge rather than in a clinic corridor. It is the least medical of the serious houses and the most beautiful of them.

The signature

Residential wellness programmes assigned after consultation — Ayurvedic-influenced, yoga-anchored, and heavily hydrotherapy-based.

The setting

Ubud, and what is practised here

These photographs show Ubud and the disciplines practised at this house. They are not photographs of the property — we would rather show you the place honestly than dress a stock picture up as a room you have not been sold.

What it is known for

Why this house has the reputation it has

  1. Opened in 1998 as Begawan Giri Estate, acquired by COMO in 2004 and relaunched as COMO Shambhala Estate in December 2005.
  2. Resident specialists rather than a spa team — the model is a consultation followed by an assigned programme, and it predates almost everything comparable in Southeast Asia.
  3. The site itself is the draw: five residences in steep jungle above a river gorge, reached by a path rather than a driveway.
  4. It anchors the COMO Shambhala wellness programme that the group now runs across its properties.

What we would tell you on the phone

It is expensive for Bali, the terrain is genuinely steep — a real consideration if you have knees or a hip — and the wellness is contemporary and eclectic rather than rooted in a single tradition. If you want a lineage, this is not it. If you want the best-run residential retreat on the island, it probably is.

Your accommodation

The rooms, and which one to ask for

  • 01

    Garden room

In the residences on the estate, opening onto the gardens.

  • 02

    Terrace suite

Larger, with a private terrace over the Ayung valley.

  • 03

    Private villa

One and two bedrooms with pools, for guests who want the estate’s programme and their own front door.

  • 04

    Residence

Five houses across the estate, each with a shared living room and staff — the way most long stays are booked.

Categories and names are as published by the property and are confirmed in writing at the quote. Where we would take a different room from the one the programme is quoted in, the note says so.

Wellness at COMO Shambhala Estate

Who is actually here

Resident wellness practitioners, nutritionists, movement and yoga specialists, with Ayurvedic and traditional Balinese therapies alongside. Every stay begins with an assessment that sets the programme rather than confirming a package you have already chosen.

We do not publish clinicians' names anywhere on this site. They move, which makes a named page quietly untrue, and naming one invites you to book a person no house can promise will be on shift — assignment is made on arrival, from your examination. What is worth knowing is how many there are and what they hold.

What the building contains

  • Vitality pools and hydrotherapy
  • Two yoga pavilions
  • Movement and pilates studios
  • Climbing wall and outdoor circuit
  • Spa with Ayurvedic and Balinese treatment rooms
  • Sacred spring on the estate
  • Jungle gorge above the Ayung river

At the table

Eating here

On a prescribed programme the food is part of the treatment rather than a choice — which is worth knowing before you arrive expecting a wine list.

  • Kudus House

A restored Javanese joglo serving the estate’s Balinese and Indonesian cooking.

  • Glow

The nutrition kitchen — the food the programmes are actually built on, and good enough to eat by choice.

Between treatments

How the days go

What there is to do here when you are not being treated, on site and within reach of it.

  • Yoga, pilates and movement classes
  • Guided gorge and rice-terrace walks
  • Cycling
  • Rafting on the Ayung
  • Temple and market visits
  • Cooking classes
