The Himalayan yoga week
Hatha and Vedanta on the estate above Rishikesh, without the ashram’s five-thirty start.

15 concerns, each answered with what helps, what a fortnight can and cannot do, and where the evidence stops.

The most common enquiry we get, and the one where the wrong booking does the most damage.
What is going on
The failure mode is predictable: somebody books the most serious programme they can find, because seriousness reads as quality, and arrives at a twenty-one-night Panchakarma with no idea that there is nothing to do after dark and the food is medicine. They last four days and conclude the whole field is not for them.
A first stay should be seven to ten nights, at a house with a timetable you can take or leave, food you would eat by choice, and something to look at outside. It should include a real consultation — that is what separates it from a hotel spa — and it should leave you wanting to come back rather than relieved to be leaving.
The second one can be the hard one. Almost everybody who does a serious Panchakarma has done something gentler first, and it is not a coincidence.
What actually helps
A structured week with a proper teacher and an optional timetable. The lowest-risk entry point there is, and it teaches you what you actually respond to.
A rejuvenation or shamana programme rather than a purification one — real treatment on the gentler line, with a physician’s consultation behind it.
The large naturopathic houses do a first stay well: a full timetable, good food, a proper assessment, and a beach if you want one.
Expectations
The commonest complaint after a wellness stay is not that it failed — it is that it was not what the guest pictured. This block is here to remove that.
Curated by hand

Per person. Sole occupancy is not half a double, and we would rather you saw both now.
A consultation, then an assigned programme in steep jungle above the Ayung — the model that made Bali serious.
Per person. Sole occupancy is not half a double, and we would rather you saw both now.
A respectful, well-mediated encounter with a living tradition — and honest that it is not medicine.

Where this is done well
Narendra Nagar, Tehri Garhwal · India
India’s first destination spa, on the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal’s palace estate above the Ganga valley — and for twenty years the most decorated wellness address in Asia.
Begawan, Payangan, above the Ayung river · Indonesia
The property that made Bali a serious wellness destination rather than a yoga town — a residential health retreat in jungle above the Ayung.
Playa Guiones, Nosara · Costa Rica
The anchor of Nosara’s twenty-year yoga community, and the most established base on the Blue Zone coast.
Choeng Mon, north-east Samui · Thailand
The house that made structured detox and yoga affordable — and the reason Samui became shorthand for the detox holiday.
