The short version

Who this house is for

Somebody who wants the treatment and does not need the hotel. Barberyn has been doing this since the 1960s for a largely German and Swiss clientele who come for three weeks at a time, and the house has never felt the need to become a resort. The medicine is the reason to be here and the rooms are simple.

The signature

The two- and three-week Ayurvedic cure, taken annually, with a physician who has often known the guest for years.

The setting

The Ayurveda coast, and what is practised here

These photographs show The Ayurveda coast and the disciplines practised at this house. They are not photographs of the property — we would rather show you the place honestly than dress a stock picture up as a room you have not been sold.

What it is known for

Why this house has the reputation it has

  1. Opened in 1984 on a property established in 1968, and generally described as the house that created the European Ayurveda holiday as a format.
  2. A long-standing Northern European clientele, much of it returning annually for two- and three-week cures — which is the single strongest signal a wellness property can have.
  3. Resident physicians, an on-site herb garden and preparation kitchen, and a treatment protocol that has been refined on the same guests for four decades.
  4. The group runs several houses along the coast, so a physician who knows you can move you between them.

What we would tell you on the phone

It is a forty-year-old building on a busy stretch of coast, and it shows: comfortable and well-run rather than luxurious. Guests who come for the medicine barely notice. Guests expecting a modern five-star property notice within an hour.

Your accommodation

The rooms, and which one to ask for

  • 01

    Standard room

Simple, clean, fan or air conditioning depending on the block. This is not a design hotel and does not pretend to be.

  • 02

    Sea-view room

Directly above the reef, with the sound of it all night. The category worth the supplement.

  • 03

    Suite

A handful of larger rooms for longer stays.

Categories and names are as published by the property and are confirmed in writing at the quote. Where we would take a different room from the one the programme is quoted in, the note says so.

Wellness at Barberyn Reef

Who is actually here

Resident Ayurvedic physicians in the Sri Lankan tradition, with an on-site herb garden and preparation kitchen. Daily physician review throughout the stay is standard rather than an upgrade.

We do not publish clinicians' names anywhere on this site. They move, which makes a named page quietly untrue, and naming one invites you to book a person no house can promise will be on shift — assignment is made on arrival, from your examination. What is worth knowing is how many there are and what they hold.

What the building contains

  • Treatment block with separate men’s and women’s wings
  • Herb garden and preparation kitchen
  • Yoga and meditation hall
  • Swimming pool
  • Direct access to the reef beach
  • Library

At the table

Eating here

On a prescribed programme the food is part of the treatment rather than a choice — which is worth knowing before you arrive expecting a wine list.

  • The dining hall

Sri Lankan Ayurvedic vegetarian, buffet-style, adjusted per guest by the physicians. Rice and curry as medicine, and very good.

Between treatments

How the days go

What there is to do here when you are not being treated, on site and within reach of it.

  • Yoga and meditation daily
  • Herb-garden walks
  • Cookery demonstrations
  • Talks on Ayurvedic principles
  • Beruwala and Bentota excursions
