A real thing and a marketing word, in roughly equal measure. Here is which is which.
What is going on
Your liver and kidneys detoxify you continuously and no programme improves on them. What the word is actually doing in this industry covers two quite different products. One is a classical medical procedure — Panchakarma, prescribed by a physician after examination, delivered over three weeks with preparation and re-feeding phases — which is a serious intervention with a serious pharmacopoeia behind it. The other is a juice fast with a colonic and an infrared sauna, sold in five nights.
We sell the first and decline the second, which is why several of the most commercially attractive programmes in this market are not on this site. The Panchakarma pages here are explicit that the five actions themselves take a day each at most, and that what takes three weeks is the preparation before and the rebuilding after — and that the rebuilding is where the benefit is made and kept.
For most people asking about a reset, the honest recommendation is a Mayr cure or a rejuvenation programme rather than a purification one. Purification is for bodies that have something to remove and the reserves to withstand its removal.
What actually helps
The classical Panchakarma, at fourteen nights minimum and properly twenty-one. Prescribed and revised daily by a physician, with a structured re-feeding phase that most short versions omit entirely.
The European answer: a physician-led staged diet with diagnostics either side. Less dramatic, more measurable, and the better choice for most first-timers.
Expectations
The commonest complaint after a wellness stay is not that it failed — it is that it was not what the guest pictured. This block is here to remove that.

Where this is done well
Chowara, near Kovalam · India
The property describes itself as the world’s first Ayurveda hospital run in a resort setting — a claim we attribute rather than assert, since Barberyn in Sri Lanka makes a parallel one — and it is unquestionably among the earliest.
Kollengode, Palakkad district · India
A NABH-accredited Ayurvedic hospital inside a restored 200-year-old Vengunad palace — nineteen rooms, twelve treatment rooms, and nothing shorter than a fortnight on sale.
Lans, above Innsbruck · Austria
The mother house of the Lanserhof group — the property that turned the F. X. Mayr gut cure into a luxury medical category.
Choeng Mon, north-east Samui · Thailand
The house that made structured detox and yoga affordable — and the reason Samui became shorthand for the detox holiday.
