The short version
Who this house is for
Somebody whose problem is the nervous system rather than the digestion, and who will be more restored by an architecturally serious building in a tea valley at 500 metres than by a beach. Sixteen chalets, no clocks in the rooms, and a schedule built around your own sleep data.
The signature
Ayurveda and stress-management programmes at altitude, with a strong emphasis on sleep and circadian reset.
The setting
The Ayurveda coast, and what is practised here
White sand and shallow water — The Ayurveda coast Warm oil poured for treatment — The Ayurveda coast Herbs prepared for a decoction — The Ayurveda coast Yoga, practised at this house
These photographs show The Ayurveda coast and the disciplines practised at this house. They are not photographs of the property — we would rather show you the place honestly than dress a stock picture up as a room you have not been sold.
What it is known for
Why this house has the reputation it has
- Built on a former tea estate and quickly established as the design-led counterweight to the coast’s older houses. We could not verify a published opening year, so we do not give one.
- Altitude changes the proposition: cooler nights, no coastal humidity, and walking that is a pleasure rather than an ordeal.
- Programmes are structured around Ayurveda, sleep and stress with a resident physician, but the house tone is modern rather than traditional.
- Very small — the scale is the point, and it is the opposite of a 200-room beach property.
What we would tell you on the phone
This is a beautifully-designed wellness hotel with a physician, not an Ayurveda hospital. If you need a full classical Panchakarma with daily physician review, the Beruwala houses do it more seriously and for less money. If you want the practice in a setting you will actually enjoy for a fortnight, this is the one.
Your accommodation
The rooms, and which one to ask for
- 01
Panoramic chalet
Free-standing, floor-to-ceiling glass onto the valley, no television. Sixteen of them across the hillside.
- 02
Vista chalet
The same construction, set slightly back into the trees. Quieter and marginally cooler.
- 03
Suite
A larger unit with a private deck and outdoor bath.
Categories and names are as published by the property and are confirmed in writing at the quote. Where we would take a different room from the one the programme is quoted in, the note says so.
Wellness at Santani Wellness Resort
Who is actually here
An integrated team — Ayurvedic physicians alongside western-trained doctors, physiotherapists, nutritionists and yoga teachers — which is unusual in Sri Lanka and is the reason the sleep and stress programmes here are more than a spa package.
We do not publish clinicians' names anywhere on this site. They move, which makes a named page quietly untrue, and naming one invites you to book a person no house can promise will be on shift — assignment is made on arrival, from your examination. What is worth knowing is how many there are and what they hold.
What the building contains

At the table
Eating here
On a prescribed programme the food is part of the treatment rather than a choice — which is worth knowing before you arrive expecting a wine list.
- The restaurant
One open kitchen, a menu built from the day’s harvest and the guest’s programme, and a genuine attempt to make prescribed food that you would order anyway.
