The case for The Nicoya peninsula
- Unlike most of this category, the claim rests on peer-reviewed work. The Costa Rican demographer Luis Rosero-Bixby followed roughly 16,300 older Costa Ricans and found a death-rate ratio of about 0.80 for Nicoyan men, independent of socioeconomic status.
- The zone is defined administratively rather than vaguely: five cantons in Guanacaste — Nicoya, Santa Cruz, Hojancha, Nandayure and Carrillo.
- There is even a biological marker in the literature: Rehkopf and Rosero-Bixby reported roughly 81 additional telomere base pairs in the immune cells of Nicoyans compared with other Costa Ricans.
- The coast supports the other half of a trip. Nosara has a twenty-year Ashtanga teaching community, so a week inland and a fortnight practising is a coherent itinerary rather than two holidays stapled together.
Checkable, not adjectival
- The Blue Zone is five cantons in Guanacaste: Nicoya, Santa Cruz, Hojancha, Nandayure and Carrillo.
- Rosero-Bixby’s follow-up of ~16,300 elderly Costa Ricans found a death-rate ratio of ~0.80 for Nicoyan men.
- Rehkopf and Rosero-Bixby (2013) reported ~81 additional telomere base pairs in Nicoyans’ immune cells.
- Rosero-Bixby’s 2023 paper in Demographic Research (vol. 49, art. 27) reports the advantage vanishing across cohorts — men born in 1905 showed roughly a third lower mortality; later cohorts do not.
- Guanacaste runs a hard dry season from December to April with near-zero rainfall.
When to come
The months that actually work
December to April is the reliable window: Guanacaste is the driest province in Costa Rica and the dry season is close to absolute, which matters for the inland roads more than for the beaches. September and October are the wettest months nationally and access to the villages becomes a genuine problem.

Hot and dry from December to April, hot and green from May to November with afternoon rain rather than all-day rain. September and October are the wettest and the emptiest.

Direct to Liberia from a dozen US cities and Toronto — this is the point of the airport.
3–5 hours - London & western Europe
One stop through a US hub, Panama City or Madrid into San José, then a domestic hop or a five-hour drive.
15–18 hours door to door - The Gulf & India
Two stops, almost always through Europe or the US east coast.

- Transfer
- Two to three hours by road from Liberia — the last thirty minutes is unpaved and slow, and a 4×4 is not a luxury in the green season. Domestic flights to Nosara run daily in season and turn three hours into thirty minutes.
- Worth knowing
- Fly into Liberia, not San José. It is the single most useful piece of advice about this destination: San José adds five hours of driving each way for no gain. If the fare difference is large we will price the domestic connection from San José against it and show you both.

Olive ridley turtles nest in mass arrivals here, usually on a dark moon between July and December. Numbers are unpredictable and no guide can promise them — go on the chance rather than the booking.

Inland from the coast, where the Blue Zone diet is actually eaten: beans, maize, squash and the traditional nixtamal corn. Far more convincing than any longevity brochure.

An active volcano with fumaroles, mud pots and waterfalls, on the way back to Liberia. Best combined with the return leg rather than done as a day trip.

The unromantic part
- Getting there
- Liberia (LIR) is much closer than San José — two to three hours by road rather than five. Domestic flights to Nosara run daily in season.
- Vehicle
- Four-wheel drive for the inland cantons, non-negotiable in the green season. Transfers are included in our programmes.
- Language
- Spanish inland, with very little English. Our village hosts are bilingual; almost nobody else is.
- Health
- Dengue is present. Take repellent seriously, particularly in the green season.
