What this actually is

The programme

Panchakarma means five actions — five procedures for removing accumulated waste from the tissues. Almost everything sold internationally under that name is the massage that precedes them. The procedures themselves take a day each at most. What takes three weeks is the preparation before and the rebuilding after, and neither is padding: they are where the result is made and kept.

A physician examines you on arrival and writes a prescription that is revised every morning for twenty-one nights. Oil internally and externally, a narrowing diet, and a body deliberately loosened before it is emptied — then twelve days of putting you back together, which is the part guests remember fondly and the part five-night versions leave out entirely.

Cliff-top gardens above Chowara beach, with the treatment wing separate from the rooms. Classified under the Kerala Tourism Ayurveda scheme, with resident BAMS physicians and an on-site pharmacy compounding the preparations rather than buying them in.

Intensity: Demanding — genuinely hard days. Every programme here carries this line, because "restorative" and "demanding" are sold with the same photographs.

Read this part twice

Who this is for, and who it is wrong for

Read the right-hand column as carefully as the left. It is the half that decides whether this is a good fortnight or a wasted one, and it is published before the price for that reason.

Book this if

  • You can genuinely clear twenty-one nights, plus two quiet days at home afterwards
  • You are in reasonable general health and want a deep reset rather than treatment for one acute problem
  • You have done a shorter Ayurvedic programme before, or have read enough to know what virechana is
  • Long unstructured afternoons sound restorative rather than alarming
  • You can come between June and September, or accept a less effective fortnight for better weather

Do not book this if

  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive this cycle
  • Active treatment for a serious illness — rejuvenation is the correct programme and we need your doctor’s letter
  • Anyone looking for a holiday with treatments attached. There is nothing to do here and the food is medicine
  • A history of an eating disorder. The dietary restriction is not appropriate and we will decline
  • Anyone who needs to work during it. Guests who try last about four days

The shape of it

Day by day

Days shift according to how you respond — that is the point of a daily review. This is the structure, not a timetable.

Purvakarma — preparation

Days 1–8 · the loosening

Snehana and swedana: oil taken internally in rising doses, oil applied externally in long daily massage, herbal steam afterwards. The object is to move waste out of the deep tissues and into the digestive tract where it can be removed. The internal ghee is the part nobody warns you about — unpleasant, brief and central.

  • Daily abhyanga, two therapists, 60–75 minutes
  • Rising doses of medicated ghee on an empty stomach
  • Diet narrowing to kitchari by day six
  • Practice reduced to breathing and walking

Pradhanakarma — the actions

Days 9–11 · the difficult days

Which of the five you receive is decided by your physician on the evidence of the first week, not in advance. For most guests it is virechana — a measured purgation over one supervised day — often with a basti series either side. You will be in your room, checked hourly, and you will not want company.

  • One supervised purgation day, with the two days after cleared
  • Basti series where indicated, on alternating days
  • Nasya for head and sinus complaints
  • No practice, no walking, no visitors

Paschatkarma — the rebuild

Days 12–19 · rasayana

Diet widens one item at a time, in a specific order — samsarjana krama — and it matters more than most guests expect. Therapies turn nourishing rather than mobilising. Practice returns gently. Sleep, for most people, changes in this week and is the first thing they notice.

  • Structured re-feeding over six days
  • Rejuvenating therapies and rasayana preparations
  • Yoga returns, quietly, from day fourteen
  • Two teaching sessions on continuing at home

Departure and after

Days 20–21, and the six weeks that follow

A closing consultation with a written protocol: three months of preparations, a daily routine you can keep, and the specific things to avoid while digestion is still rebuilding. A follow-up video call at six weeks is included and is, in our experience, the difference between a good fortnight and a changed year.

  • Written protocol and three months of preparations to take home
  • Follow-up consultation at six weeks, included
  • Direct line to the physician for three months

A day, hour by hour

What a Tuesday actually looks like

About five hours of the day are fixed; the afternoon is deliberately empty and guests find that the hardest part of the fortnight.

  1. Wake, before the lightWarm water, tongue scraper. Nobody is cheerful about this on day one; everybody is awake before the alarm by day nine.
  2. Pranayama and a slow practiceForty minutes. During purification weeks the physician often replaces asana entirely with breathing and a walk.
  3. ConsultationPulse, tongue, sleep, digestion, mood. Ten minutes with the vaidya, every morning. Today's prescription is written after it, not before.
  4. Breakfast, and it is soupRice gruel with ghee and rock salt. It tastes better by day four. It genuinely does.
  5. Therapy — the long blockTwo to three hours. Abhyanga with four hands, then swedana, then whichever action your week calls for. You rest afterwards; resting is prescribed.
  6. Lunch — the largest mealEaten when digestion is strongest and at the same hour daily. Six tastes on the plate, cooked for your constitution.
  7. The empty afternoonUnprogrammed on purpose. Read, sleep, walk, sit.
  8. Yoga nidra or a herbal steamWhichever the morning consultation decided.
  9. Dinner, then darkLight, early, finished by seven. Lamps down at nine.

Where you stay

Somatheeram Ayurveda Village

The property describes itself as the world’s first Ayurveda hospital run in a resort setting — a claim we attribute rather than assert, since Barberyn in Sri Lanka makes a parallel one — and it is unquestionably among the earliest.

Palms over a Kerala backwater channel

Forty years of operation means forty years of building, and the estate is larger and busier than the boutique houses inland. If you want twelve guests and silence, Palakkad will suit you better; if you want the institution that invented this, it is here.

Who looks after you

Supervision, by qualification and number

You will not find a physician's name on this site. Staff move, and a page that names one is a page that quietly goes out of date — worse, it invites you to book a person no house can promise will be on shift. Assignment is made on arrival, from your examination, at every serious property here.

Clinical supervision
A resident BAMS physician — five and a half years of training including a clinical internship, registered with a statutory council — examines you on arrival and reviews you every morning of the stay.
The team around you
Two therapists work on you together and are assigned for the whole stay rather than rostered daily. The fourth abhyanga with someone who knows your body is a different treatment from the first.
Consultations
Daily, plus arrival and departure examinations, and a video follow-up six weeks after you get home.
Your consultation is with our clinical desk, not a salesperson. The free call before you book is about whether this programme is right for you at all — and often enough it ends with a recommendation to go shorter, later, or somewhere we do not sell.

Counted, so you can compare

What is actually in it

Most of this industry publishes inclusions as a bulleted list, which cannot be compared between two programmes at two prices. These can.

  • 48+hours of therapy

Two to three hours daily with a dedicated therapist pair, rising through the preparation phase and falling during the actions.

  • 21physician consultations

Every morning: pulse, tongue, sleep, digestion, mood. The day's prescription is written after it, not before.

  • 3months of preparations

Dispensed from the on-site pharmacy to take home, which is where a fortnight becomes a year.

  • 1follow-up at six weeks

A video consultation with the house, included. In our experience it is the difference between a good fortnight and a changed year.

The money

Prices, by season and occupancy

Both occupancies in every band, before you enquire rather than after. Sole occupancy is not half a double and never has been — publishing only the sharing rate quotes the minority of this market and surprises the rest.

Preparation, the actions, and a full eight-day rebuild. This is what Panchakarma means and it is the length the house was built around.

Prices per person by season and occupancy
SeasonSharingSingle
Low seasonJune to SeptemberUS$3,430US$4,120
ShoulderOctober, November, April and MayUS$3,890US$4,670
High seasonDecember to MarchUS$4,520US$5,450
  • Low season. The monsoon — and in Kerala the monsoon is the treatment season. Humidity keeps the channels receptive to oil, the air is cool, and the houses are empty. The cheapest months are also the most effective ones, which almost never happens.
  • Shoulder. Post-monsoon October and November are excellent and busier. April and May are hot enough that we would steer you elsewhere in the year unless the dates are fixed.
  • High season. Dry, bright, and what the brochures photograph. It is a perfectly good fortnight and it is a less effective one, at about a quarter more.

What the price is. Per person for twenty-one nights, including the room, all meals cooked to your prescription, every prescribed therapy, all medicines during the stay, three months of preparations to take home, return airport transfers and the follow-up consultation. Flights are quoted separately and we can hold them with the programme.

Illustrative, and held for seven days once we have quoted you in writing. Nothing on this site costs more for booking it through us.

Questions

The ones we are actually asked

Is twenty-one nights really necessary?
For classical Panchakarma, yes. Internal oleation alone takes three to seven days depending on how you respond, and the rebuilding phase is where the benefit is consolidated. Fourteen nights is our absolute floor and it compresses the rebuild. Anything shorter is a different product wearing this one’s name.
How bad is the purgation day, honestly?
Unpleasant and entirely manageable. You take the preparation in the morning and spend the day in your room within reach of a bathroom, checked hourly. Most people report cramping, tiredness and a strange clarity by evening. Nobody enjoys it. Very few regret it.
Is it safe with my medication?
Usually, with adjustment, and it must be declared. Anticoagulants, thyroid medication, diabetes drugs, lithium and immunosuppressants all change the plan. Nobody here will ever suggest stopping something your own doctor prescribed.
