Wellness retreats from the UAE

Kerala is a direct flight of about four hours from the UAE, and the UAE’s summer school holidays fall in the monsoon — the traditional season for Ayurvedic treatment. In the same weeks, the Alpine clinics offer the cool air a Gulf summer does not.

The bit that decides it

When you can travel, and whether that is the right season

The Gulf calendar does something no European one does. The long summer school break, through July and August, falls in Kerala’s monsoon — the traditional season for Ayurvedic treatment, with Karkidakam, the classical month for a rejuvenation course, running from mid-July to mid-August. Kerala Tourism campaigns in the Gulf for exactly this season. The same weeks are the best of the Alpine walking cures in the Tyrol and Bad Gastein. The December break suits Sri Lanka’s Ayurveda coast, which is dry from December to April. Ramadan is a quiet month for travel; the Eid holidays are the peak, so book those weeks early.

Worth knowing. With frequent four-hour flights to Kerala you can choose your arrival time, so choose daylight. At the Ayurveda houses the first evening usually includes a consultation, and a 3 a.m. landing costs you a day of it.

Getting there

The shape of the journey from the UAE

  • Kerala

Direct, and frequent — about four hours. Kerala has the densest Gulf connection of any Indian state, into both Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

  • Sri Lanka

Direct to Colombo, several times a day.

  • Rishikesh and Bhutan

Through Delhi. There is no international service into Dehradun, so Rishikesh is a flight to Delhi and the short domestic hop; Bhutan is a flight on one of the Bhutanese carriers from Delhi to Paro.

  • The European cure towns

One direct flight from Dubai or Abu Dhabi to a European hub, then a train or a short drive: Frankfurt for Baden-Baden, Munich or Vienna for the Tyrol and Bad Gastein, Geneva or Zurich for Montreux, Paris for Quiberon, Prague for Karlovy Vary.

  • Bali, Koh Samui and Japan

A longer journey east. Bali and Koh Samui commonly connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok; Japan through Tokyo or Seoul — into Fukuoka for Beppu, or on to Naha for Okinawa.

Routes describe the shape of the journey, not a timetable. Carriers and connections change every season, so we confirm the actual routing in writing with your quote.

Which wellness retreats are easiest to reach from Dubai?
Kerala and Sri Lanka are direct flights of four to five hours. Every European cure town on this map is one direct flight to a hub such as Frankfurt, Munich, Geneva or Prague, then a train or a short drive.
Can I do Ayurveda in Kerala during the UAE summer holidays?
Yes — it is the classical time to do it. June to September is the monsoon, when the humidity keeps the skin receptive to oil therapies, and Karkidakam, from mid-July to mid-August, is the traditional month for a full rejuvenation course. Expect rain most days; the treatment, not the beach, is the point.
Where can I go for a cool-weather wellness retreat in the Gulf summer?
The Alps. The Tyrol clinics above Innsbruck and the thermal cure at Bad Gastein are at their best in July and August, with daytime highs in the low-to-mid twenties, and Baden-Baden is good all summer. Montreux is best in June or late August, because the town is full for the Jazz Festival in July.
Should I book a wellness retreat over Eid?
You can, but the Eid holidays are the busiest travel weeks of the Gulf year, so book flights and rooms as early as possible. Eid moves about eleven days earlier each year, so check where it falls against the destination’s season — the same Eid can land in Kerala’s monsoon one year and in its hot pre-monsoon months a few years later.
