How long
Fourteen nights is our absolute floor for Panchakarma and twenty-one is the real answer. Anything sold as a Panchakarma in under a week is a different product wearing this one’s name.

What we are treating

I want to properly clean myself out once a year.

A real thing and a marketing word, in roughly equal measure. Here is which is which.

Your liver and kidneys detoxify you continuously and no programme improves on them. What the word is actually doing in this industry covers two quite different products. One is a classical medical procedure — Panchakarma, prescribed by a physician after examination, delivered over three weeks with preparation and re-feeding phases — which is a serious intervention with a serious pharmacopoeia behind it. The other is a juice fast with a colonic and an infrared sauna, sold in five nights.

We sell the first and decline the second, which is why several of the most commercially attractive programmes in this market are not on this site. The Panchakarma pages here are explicit that the five actions themselves take a day each at most, and that what takes three weeks is the preparation before and the rebuilding after — and that the rebuilding is where the benefit is made and kept.

For most people asking about a reset, the honest recommendation is a Mayr cure or a rejuvenation programme rather than a purification one. Purification is for bodies that have something to remove and the reserves to withstand its removal.

What actually helps

  • ayurvedaThe classical Panchakarma, at fourteen nights minimum and properly twenty-one. Prescribed and revised daily by a physician, with a structured re-feeding phase that most short versions omit entirely.
  • mayrThe European answer: a physician-led staged diet with diagnostics either side. Less dramatic, more measurable, and the better choice for most first-timers.

What a programme actually does

  • Being talked out of the short version if you are depleted rather than congested. It is the commonest redirection we make.
  • Internal oleation, if this is a real Panchakarma — medicated ghee on an empty stomach in rising doses. Brief, unpleasant, central.
  • One supervised difficult day, with the two days after it cleared.
  • A structured re-feeding over six days that matters more than anything before it.
  • Two quiet days at home afterwards, which we will build into the flights.

Kerala. For treatment the monsoon is the season — not despite the rain but because of it. Humidity keeps the skin and channels receptive to oil, the air is cool, and Keralans have taken their own annual course in this month for centuries. March to May is the part to avoid: 35 °C and humid is a poor climate for daily oil therapy. The brochures sell January because January photographs better, and it costs a great deal more for a less effective fortnight.

What we would tell you on the phone. Purification is contraindicated in pregnancy and while breastfeeding, during active treatment for serious illness, with a history of an eating disorder, and in frail or significantly underweight people. Several common medications need adjustment. If you are unwell rather than congested, the correct programme is rejuvenation and a good physician will tell you so on day one — if one does not, leave.

Asked and answered

Questions we actually get

Is the monsoon really better, or is that a way to sell the low season?
Both are true and we would rather say so. The classical rationale predates tourism by centuries — Karkidakam is the treatment month in Kerala’s own calendar. It is also when properties are empty. Our position: the season genuinely helps, the discount is real, and if you hate rain you should come in October and lose very little.
Can I do a proper Panchakarma in a week?
No. Preparation alone runs three to seven days before the main purification, and the rebuilding phase afterwards is where the benefit is consolidated. Fourteen nights is our floor. With only a week, take a shamana programme — a real treatment on the gentler line — and we will say so on the invoice.
What does a state Ayurveda classification actually prove?
That Kerala Tourism inspected facilities, hygiene, therapist training and physician presence against a published checklist, and may re-inspect without notice. It is a useful signal and it is not a clinical accreditation — ask for the resident physician’s BAMS registration number too. Note the scheme was renamed: Ayur Silver, Gold and Diamond replaced Olive Leaf and Green Leaf, so older certificates cite retired grades.
