How long
Fourteen nights. This is a cluster rather than a symptom, and a week only reaches one part of it.

What we are treating

I am not sleeping, I am not myself, and I am tired of being told it is normal.

A concern the mainstream travel industry has almost entirely ignored, and one where a fortnight can do a surprising amount.

The cluster is familiar and it is rarely addressed as a cluster: broken sleep, temperature dysregulation, joint aches, mood volatility, a changed body composition and a digestion that no longer behaves. Each of those has an answer somewhere; almost nothing puts them together and works on them at once for two weeks.

Ayurveda has a formal framework here — this is the rajonivritti transition, and the classical response is a rebuilding rasayana line rather than an aggressive purification one, with specific attention to sleep, joints and the nervous system. A physician qualified in the women’s-health branch leads it, and the programmes we book are led by one.

What we will not do is tell you this replaces hormone therapy. It sits alongside whatever you and your doctor have decided, and the good houses ask what that is before they write anything.

What actually helps

  • ayurvedaA rasayana-led protocol with the classical women’s-health preparations, plus daily abhyanga and shirodhara for the sleep and temperature symptoms. Led by a physician qualified in prasuti tantra and stri roga.
  • yogaWeight-bearing practice for bone, restorative practice for sleep, and breathing for the vasomotor symptoms — taught one to one so the balance is right for where you are.
  • mayrFor the metabolic and body-composition side specifically, with laboratory work at both ends so the changes are measured.

What a programme actually does

  • A long opening consultation about the whole cluster rather than one symptom.
  • Daily oil therapy, with the evening treatments aimed squarely at sleep.
  • Weight-bearing movement prescribed, which many menopause programmes still leave out.
  • A diet with real attention to protein and to blood sugar, not merely a light one.
  • Preparations to take home with a three-month protocol.

Kerala. For treatment the monsoon is the season — not despite the rain but because of it. Humidity keeps the skin and channels receptive to oil, the air is cool, and Keralans have taken their own annual course in this month for centuries. March to May is the part to avoid: 35 °C and humid is a poor climate for daily oil therapy. The brochures sell January because January photographs better, and it costs a great deal more for a less effective fortnight.

What we would tell you on the phone. Nothing here replaces HRT, and no physician at any house on this site should suggest stopping it — if one does, tell us. Post-menopausal bleeding, a new breast lump, or any sudden change needs a doctor at home, immediately, and not a retreat. Some herbal preparations interact with tamoxifen, anticoagulants and thyroid medication, so the full list has to be declared.

Asked and answered

Questions we actually get

Is the monsoon really better, or is that a way to sell the low season?
Both are true and we would rather say so. The classical rationale predates tourism by centuries — Karkidakam is the treatment month in Kerala’s own calendar. It is also when properties are empty. Our position: the season genuinely helps, the discount is real, and if you hate rain you should come in October and lose very little.
Can I do a proper Panchakarma in a week?
No. Preparation alone runs three to seven days before the main purification, and the rebuilding phase afterwards is where the benefit is consolidated. Fourteen nights is our floor. With only a week, take a shamana programme — a real treatment on the gentler line — and we will say so on the invoice.
What does a state Ayurveda classification actually prove?
That Kerala Tourism inspected facilities, hygiene, therapist training and physician presence against a published checklist, and may re-inspect without notice. It is a useful signal and it is not a clinical accreditation — ask for the resident physician’s BAMS registration number too. Note the scheme was renamed: Ayur Silver, Gold and Diamond replaced Olive Leaf and Green Leaf, so older certificates cite retired grades.

Not sure this is the right list?

Tell us what is actually wrong and we will shortlist three houses — or tell you that Kerala, India is the wrong answer, which happens about one enquiry in six.
